Serve as a Mentor for Bellevue Students

Mentors provide support for students in and out of the classroom, serving as positive role models and encouraging students to succeed.

Sammamish High School - As part of the new mentoring program at Sammamish High School, mentors in the science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) fields, as well as humanities fields, are paired with students and classrooms to introduce real-world elements to the curriculum and provide students with exposure to potential careers. Mentors are needed as soon as mid-August. Contact Kim Herzog at herzogk@bsd405.org or 425.456.7680 to learn how to participate.

SHS needs 40 online writing mentors now for a 5-week freshman persuasive writing assignment.

Bellevue Big Picture School - The Bellevue Big Picture School, new in 2011, seeks to provide students with highly personalized and relevant learning experiences. Mentors are needed to work one-on-one with students, as a well as with entire classrooms, helping to connect students with college and career pathways, hosting students on workplace visits, reviewing student projects related to their fields of work, and more.

BPS needs 50 high school internship sites by mid-November and dozens of professionals for informational interviews. Students will work Wednesdays and Thursdays (10-12 hours/week) for ten weeks. Careers of interest can be found here.

Middle school mentors are also needed. Sign up now by contacting Barb Mercier at mercierb@bsd405.org or 425.456.7807.

College Corps - College Corps mentors work one-on-one after school with students at Interlake and Sammamish High Schools, helping them with the college application process. Many of the students are the first in their families to be on track to graduate from high school and attend college. Contact Arlene Scott at scottar@bsd405.org or 425.456.7797 to learn more.

Legacy Leadership - Mentors in the Legacy Leadership programs work with African American/black boys (Groundbreakers), African American/black girls (I Like Me), and Latina Girls (Building Dreams) in leadership camps and school-based mentoring groups. They serve as positive role models and strengthen community partnerships. To learn more, contact VIBES (Volunteers in Bellevue's Education System) at vibes@bsd405.org or 425.456.4154.

One-on-One Volunteers - One-on-one volunteers meet weekly with the same student. They typically serve as both tutors and mentors, working with students on academics and helping to deal with difficult issues. Students greatly benefit from one-on-one attention from a caring adult. Opportunities are available in every school. Contact VIBES (Volunteers in Bellevue's Education System) at vibes@bsd405.org or 425.456.4154 for more information.
